Pallaskenry Mayoral Race in Aid of Pallaskenry GAAPallaskenry GAA recently launched an innovative and exciting fundraising event to find a Mayor for Pallaskenry. Three candidates have been selected to contest the Race for Mayor, with the winner being the person who raises the most money. There is a substantial prize for the overall winner and also prizes for those who sponsor each candidate. Over the coming weeks the candidates will be traveling throughout the county and beyond collecting money for a very worthwhile cause. Pallaskenry GAA Chairman Davy Gleeson(second from right), with the 3 Mayoral Race Candidates Brenda Ward, Michael Lynch & Breda Clarke. This year Pallaskenry GAA celebrates its centenary year, having played its first competitive match in 1906. This has been a particularly successful season with the club winning trophies at many levels. It started back in the spring time with our National School hurling team winning their division. Both our U-14 hurlers and footballers won out their respective divisions in the City Championship and went on to compete at county level. Also early in the season our Junior footballers won their league in the City Division before losing to Pallasgreen in a County Semi-Final. Just a few weeks ago our Junior Hurlers brought home the City Championship trophy for the first time in the history of the club. But the greatest triumph this season was that feat achieved by our Minor Footballers. Having teamed up with Kildimo, we won the City Championship before defeating Glin to be crowned County Division 1 Minor Football Champions. All this on-field success did not come easy and much expense was incurred along the way. While much of the work behind the scenes is done voluntarily, insurance costs continue to soar along with having to pay for team equipment, transport and trainers for the various teams.| The Candidates | | | | Michael ‘Patch’ Lynch Michael, a recent resident to the community, lives in New Market Lane, just off Main St. A native of Ballybrown, he went to school in St. Marys Askeaton and St.Clements, Limerick. He is an outgoing person and since moving to Pallaskenry has become involved with the GAA club helping out with various teams and events at underage level. Michael will be calling on the support of his fellow workers at Grassland Fertilizers and also those who remember him as a fine hurler with Ballybrown. He cites winning a Minor ‘A’ Hurling County Championship as his greatest achievement on the playing fields. | | | | | Brenda Ward Brenda is the only native of Pallaskenry in this Mayoral Race, being born and raised in the village. Now residing in Cluain Mhuire and working for Lufthansa in Shannon, her supporters will be traveling far and wide to canvas support and collect money to ensure Brenda becomes Mayoress of Pallaskenry. With her two nephews playing a key part in the Junior Hurlers success, it’s no surprise that winning the City Junior Hurling Championship for the first time is Brenda’s favourite GAA moment. | | | | Breda Clarke The most experienced of the three candidates, Breda, like Brenda, lives in Cluain Mhuire. But like Michael, Breda grew up in nearby Ballybrown. Breda attended school in Tervoe and the Technical College on O’Connell Avenue, Limerick. Husband Tommy is vice president of the GAA Club and her sons have represented the local club with distinction. Breda believes she would make a good Mayoress of Pallaskenry because of her involvement in the Community Council and with the Golden Oldies Club. Breda believes if the young and old work together the community can thrive and prosper. Amongst her favourite GAA moments were watching Limerick defeat Kilkenny in 1973 and the recent triumph by Pallaskenry to win the City Junior B Hurling Championship in which her son, Dermot, played a key role. | |
The winning candidate will be announced at a special function in early December. So please be generous in your support and the best of luck to each candidate.
