ALLIANZ SARSFIELD CUP FINAL
LIMERICK CITY NATIONAL SCHOOL 2-04 SOUTH LIMERICK NATIONAL SCHOOL 0-02.
The City Division National School football team reclaimed the Sarsfield Cup for the first time in twenty years when totally dominating their opponents in the competition that was played last Wednesday. On a good day for football the matches between the four divisions were played in Garryspillane GAA Pitch, Knocklong with the East Limerick taking on Limerick City and West Limerick coming up against South Limerick in the semi finals. Darren O‘Connell was our representative on the City Division team and played both matches in the forwards, doing well throughout. In the first semi final Darren scored a point as the City accounted for the East in a tough gameas they proved stronger winning on a scoreline of 3-07 to 1-04..
In the other semi final the South overcame the West scoring four goals and keeping a clean sheet to win on a scorelne of 4-05 to 0-10. So it was the City and the South Divisions that qualified for the Allianz sponsored Sarsfield Cup Final of 2009 organised by Cumann Na mBunscol. Luimnigh. Having played at corner forward in the semi final Darren O’Connell moved to half forward for the final and did well throughout. The South Division looked very strong at the start and opened the scoring with a point but failed to score again until the last few minutes. The City Team dominated all over the field with Kildimo’s Kyle Hayes having a great game at half back in both games. Others who did well for the City include Ballybrown’s Michael Davoren, Jordan Higgins & Danny Harty of Patrickswell and Evan O’Connor from Monaleen. When the final whistle blew there were scenes of great jubilation as the City Division triumphed by 2-04 to 0-02 with a superb team performance. Well done to all the players involved and the coaches Paul O’Connor & Ciaran Crowe (both Patrickswell N.S.), Shane O’Neill & Mike Cronin (both Chríost Rí N.S.) and Joe Lyons (Ballybrown N.S.) for a great job. Thanks to the referee and to Garryspillane GAA who had the pitches in excellent order.
