Junior Footballers begin League campaign with a Victory

City Junior B Football League
Pallaskenry 3-15 Claughaun 2-09.

Our Junior Footballers got their League campaign off to a winning start with a fine nine point victory over Claughaun in Pallaskenry. We started tentatively with Claughaun quickest off the mark with a point in the first minute as we missed a number of early chances. Finally Lorcan Fitz had our opening score after 7 minutes but Claughaun led once again before Kevin Taylor hit a fine point to level things after ten minutes. Claughaun edged ahead once more before three points in succession from Ciaran Ryan, Simon Guerin & Lorcan saw us lead by two at the midway point. We began to settle more and played some excellent football with Adrian Garvey controlling the play around the middle and Mikey Dillon & Adrian Guerin on top in defence. Simon Guerin cancelled out a Claughaun point before our defence was caught napping and Claughaun moved ahead with a well worked goal to lead by one. An excellent final ten minutes though saw us lead by five points at half time with full forward Lorcan Fitz making the most of the possession coming his way and scoring 2-02 from play.

Half time saw the introduction of Padraig O'Connell for Kevin Taylor at centre back with Kevin Gallagher moving up to the forwards and Padraig was quick into action cutting out a number of early attacks from Claughaun. The switch of Ian Gibbs to corner forward also paid off as he found more space closer to goal and hit three points in the opening 12 minutes along with efforts from Darren Walsh and Lorcan Fitz. This put us ten points up and in complete control against our more illustrious city opponents. A brief fight back saw Claughaun hit 1-1 in a three minute spell but Ian Gibbs settled things with a fine point after good work bySimon Guerin and Kevin Gallagher tagged on another before sub Gavin McKee finished an excellent move with a bullet of shot to the net. The match ended with two points for Claughaun but the league points were well wrapped up at this stage and it was a good performance all round with a trip to Patrickswell up next followed by a visit from Ballinacurra Gaels.
