John Barry Pallaskenry GAA Club President RIP
Last Sunday afternoon saw the passing of John Barry Pallaskenry GAA Club President and the first man from the parish to win an All Ireland Hurling Medal. We would like to express our deepest condolences tohis wife and large family at this sad time. Throughout the late 1930s, '40s and '50s John reached great heights on the playing fields throughout Limerick and beyond. John started with Pallaskenry but later played with Kildimo. In 1948 he won a National League medal with Limerick, when they defeated Kilkenny. In 1952 he lined out at wing forward when Limerick overcame Cork in the Munster Junior Hurling Final. Two years later, he became the first ever Pallaskenry player to collect an All-Ireland medal whenhe was on the county team that defeated London in the Junior Hurling Final. Three years later in 1957 many locals had the privilege to watch him repeat the feat when Limerick once again defeated London in the All-Ireland Junior Hurling Final, in a game that was played in Limerick. In recent years John's Grandsons have become involved in the running of the club. His grandson John is coach to the U10's & U12's while Brian Barry is the club's assistant secretary. Brian also plays football with the club, helping them to this years city Junior B Football Final. The family involvement doesn't end their with the latest offspring Sean, John's great-grandson, showing great promise on the field with our U10 and U12 hurling and football teams.
