U21 Hurlers Fall to Croagh/Kilfinny in County Semi
County U21 'B' Hurling Semi Final
Killulta Gaels 2-07 Croagh/Kilfinny 1-16.
It was a case of too many walking wounded as Killulta struggled to have fifteen fit players ready for this County Semi final after recent exertions left many key players on the sideline due to injury. Croagh/Kilfinny started the stronger and their midfielder Stephen Foley was like a steam train cutting through the Killulta defence for an early point. Persistant fouling did not help Killulta's cause as corner forward and Croagh captain Chris Casey helped himself to five first half points from placed balls. Foley added a second for Croagh who along with his partner Michael Collins were well on top around the middle. this allowed wing forward Richard Shortan plent of possession and scored two fine points in the first half with Killulta's only reply a point each from Ronan Liston and Shane Hayes (free). Despite some good effort by full back Cian Hayes, enterprising runs from Séamus McKeogh and hard work from forwards Robert McKeogh and Darren Walsh Killulta could only watch as the team from the West went in ten points up at half time, 0-12 to 0-02.
It was a spirited performance from Killulta Gaels in the second half but scores were few and hard to come by. Two points in the opening 12 minutes did close the gap somewhat but a goal from Chris Casey only served to widen the difference and meant Killulta needed goals of their own. The fact that only one of our forwards scored while Croagh's starting front six scored 1-11 made it an impossible task but keeper James Carey converted a penalty late on to give some hope. Aidan Lunn further reduced the gap when pulling expertly on a low ball to reduce the deficit to six but it was a case of too little too late as referee Leo O'Sullivan blew for full time shortly afterwards. Well done to the lads for the effort put in and thanks to the management team of Adrian Guerin, James Carey, Brendan O'Shea and Seamus Chawke.
