There were great celebrations in Pallaskenry last Thursday, March 4th, as the Primary School U-13 team won the city football final.
Scoil Mhuire NS Pallaskenry.. 1-5 Corpus Christi NS Moyross.. 1-2
Playing in glorious sunshine, we got off to a bad start when Corpus Christi scored a goal from a free kick after 2 minutes, the ball just dipping under the bar. They then converted another free, leaving us 1-1 to no score early in the game. Finally, we started to play some good football: Seán Holland and Cameron Fu-Lynch managed to get on top in the backline and Lorcan O’Leary and Darren O Connell in centre field began to play well. Darren O Connell scored 3 points on the trot, leaving only 1 point in it but Corpus Christi came back and scored one more point to leave the score 0-3 to 1-2 at half time.
We got more into the game in the 2nd half – Mikey Nash was having a great game in goals, nothing was getting past Liam O Sullivan at corner back and Martin Neville and Odhran Cuddihy were passing the ball well in the forwards. Darren O Connell then tagged on 2 more points to level the score. The game was very close in the last 10 minutes, Evin Kelly was very unlucky not to score a number of times but, with 5 minutes to go, he finally made the breakthrough and scored a well-taken goal to put us 3 points ahead. It was tight for the last few minutes but we held out for a famous victory.
The captain, Darren O Connell, thanked Corpus Christi for a great, sporting game of football. He also thanked his team mates, who never gave up till the final whistle, and he thanked Vincent Fitzgerald and Tim O Sullivan for coaching the team.
The Parents’ Council treated the players to a meal in Kilcornan House afterwards.
