U16 HURLERS RELINQUISH UNBEATEN RUN

Under 16 Hurling ACL Round 7

Killulta Gaels 1-11 Croagh/Kilfinny 3-13

Our unbeaten run came to an end on Monday evening last when we travelled to Croagh for the final match in the League stages of the competition. We had some significant absences on the day due to holidays and injury and we would have needed our strongest side to make a closer contest of this. Killulta started brightest with points from frees from Martin Nunan and Jack O’Keeffe. Croagh however responded with a goal and 3 pointsby the end of the first quarter and Killulta were struggling to keep in touch. Further points were added from Tom O’Shea and Jack O’Keeffe but Croagh always responded and notched up another goal and 4 points before halftime. Tony McCarthy and Tom O’Shea were battling hard and added a point each to leave the scores at 2-7 to 0-6 at half-time but with a significant breeze assisting we were hoping for better fortune in the second half.

Croagh quickly dashed that hope and added 2 points before Jack andMartin responded with points – the latter from a free. Croagh then had three unanswered points before Martin Nunans long free dropped into the square and found it’s way into the net through a group of players. He then added a point before Croagh repliedwith a goal and a point. Darragh Walsh had the final say with an excellent point .

Looking past the disappointment of the result, it has to be noted that all our players worked extremely hard right to the final whistle. Jack O’Keeffe was always working hard in the forwards as was Tony McCarthy, Darragh Walsh and Martin Nunan in Midfield. The best performance of the evening was the combination of defense and attack displayed by Ross Mann.

We now await the draw for the next round the quarter-final which is due to be played on August 21st.
